If you were required to marry someone of a different ethnicity than your own, which ethnicity would you choose?
I’m an American with a very complex ethnic background (the major components are Scots, Norwegian, Syrian, and Ashkenazi Jew). I married a woman who was Cuban on one side and African American on the other. This is her, almost twenty years ago. In my opinion, she was the most beautiful woman in the world, an opinion I still hold. Her eyes were amazingly expressive, and her smile could light up a city block, it was so beautiful. And when she had that wry grin, like in this picture, it was like she knew a secret and wasn’t going to share it with anyone. And to this day I have no idea what it was that convinced her to marry a complete schlep like me. We married right out of high school, married on an impulse, and were together for just over twenty years, until her death from cancer. I still miss her very much.
